As an underage athlete, you have the right to be treated at all times with respect by the other athletes, the coaches and the referees, so that the practice of your sport enhances your physical, psychological and social development.
We invite you to take a look at the
Charte des droits de l’enfant dans le sport published by the Institut international des droits de l’enfant (the International Institute for the Rights of the Child) and which describes the fundamental rights and liberties of children in sports.
However, this also means that you have certain responsibilities when practicing your sport.
Every athlete has the right to the following, without being limited to:
- the protection, the safety and the attention that the parents the athlete or the people in this position can give him or her [E; Q; S]
- the security, the integrity and the liberty of his or her person [Q]
- the safekeeping of the athlete’s dignity, honour and reputation [Q; S]
- the freedom to choose a sport [R]
- the absence of discrimination toward his or her person [Q; R]
- to be heard when it comes to decisions that concern him or her [R; S]
- freedom of speech [Q; R]
- freedom of association and freedom of peaceful assembly to practice sports activities [Q; R]
- to practice a sport only for the fun of it [R]
- to practice a sport according to the athlete’s capacities [R]
- to rest [R]
- to not be separated from his or her parents against the athlete’s will [R]
- to a free public education [Q; R]
- to his or her health [E; R]
- to be protected against all forms of exploitation [Q; R]
- the respect of privacy [Q; R; S]
- the respect of his or her name [S]
- the respect of the professional secrecy[Q]
- to be accompanied and assisted by a person of his or her choosing when the athlete wishes to obtain information or when he or she meets with the director, or any other authorized person [E]
- to obtain necessary help from an adult when he or she wishes to inform competent authorities regarding a situation compromising his or her security and development, those of his or her siblings, as well as those of any other child [E]
- to not be submitted without his or her consent, or that of his or her parents or tutors, depending on the circumstances, to care, whatever the nature [S]
The illicit infringement to a right or a freedom prescribed in this charter entitles the victim to the right to demand the cessation of such infringement, along with compensation for the moral or material prejudice resulting therefrom. In case of illicit and intentional infringement, the court may condemn the author to punitive damages. [Q]
